The comparatives and superlatives in Spanish, English and Portuguese are used to make comparisons. The comparative adjectives in Spanish are used when comparing two things or people and the superlative adjectives in Spanish to highlight superiority or inferiority

The adjectives of positive degree

Adjectives of positive degree describe the quality in its simplest form.

You are tall and beautiful.	Tú eres alta y hermosa.	Você é alta e bela.

The adjectives of comparative degree

The adjectives of comparative degree make emphasis on superiority, inferiority or equality.

For long adjectives in English, the word more is used for comparison.

How are the adjectives of comparative degree used?

The following rule must be followed: más + adjetivo + que

She’s more beautiful than her friends.	Ella es más bonita que sus amigas.	Ela é mais bonita que suas amigas.
My cats are more intelligent than yours.	Mis gatos son más inteligentes que los tuyos.	Meus gatos são mais inteligentes que os seus.
This brand is more expensive than the other one.	Esta marca es más costosa que la otra.	Esta marca é mais cara que a outra.
My parents are more generous than hers.	Mis padres son más generosos que los suyos.	Meus pais são mais generosos que os seus.

For short adjectives in English or ending in a consonant Y the suffix ER is used to make the comparison.

For short adjectives the following rule must be followed: más + adjetivo con sufijo ER + que

The comparatives of inferiority in English use the words not as…as to make the comparison.

The following rule must be followed: no tan…como

Adjectives of superlative degree indicate quality at the highest level.

How are the adjectives of superlative degree used?

The following rule must be followed: Artículo definido (el / la / los / las) + adjetivo con EST al final

The following rule must be followed: Artículo definido (el / la / los / las) + más + adjetivo
