What is the gerund?

The gerund in Spanish, English and Portuguese is a form of the unconjugated verb.

How does the gerund work in Spanish?

The endings IENDO, ANDO or ENDO of the gerund in Spanish and ANDO or ENDO in Portuguese are equivalent to the ING ending in English.

The ING ending does not always refer to the IENDO, ANDO or ENDO endings in Spanish or ANDO or ENDO in Portuguese.

Rules of use of the gerund

First rule

Usually the ending of the verb (AR, ER IR) is removed and the endings IENDO, ANDO and ENDO are placed at the end of the verb in Spanish and ANDO and ENDO in Portuguese.

Second rule

When the verb ends in AR, ER or IR we remove the ending and replace it with IENDO, ANDO or ENDO in Spanish, and ANDO or ENDO in Portuguese.

Third rule

When the verb ends in AR, ER or IR we remove the ending and replace it with IENDO, ANDO or ENDO in Spanish, and ANDO or ENDO in Portuguese.

Fourth rule

When the verb ends in AR, ER or IR we remove the ending and replace it with IENDO, ANDO or ENDO in Spanish, and ANDO or ENDO in Portuguese.
