The past continuous in Spanish or past progressive is formed using the verb Estar in Spanish or Portuguese (To be verb in English) along with the main verb with its gerund ending.

The past continuous describes:

  • Actions that occurred in the past at the time they were carried out

How to form the past continuous in Spanish?

The following rule must be followed:

  • Personal pronoun + To be verb (in Spanish) conjugated in the simple past + Verb ending in IENDO, ANDO, ENDO in Spanish and ANDO, ENDO in Portuguese and Complement.

Yo estaba leyendo un libro

Eu estava lendo um livro

You were working in the car
